Mr. K's Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store Near Summerville To Close
Mr. K's Piggly Wiggly is named for Jim Kersting's father, Jack Kersting of Summerville, who opened a 13,500-square-foot store in 1982 on Cedar Street. In 1991, the grocer moved a block and a half down the street to its current location in a store double the size of its original site. In 2001, Mr. K's opened a second Summerville area grocery shop in Knightsville.
Sixteen years later, the Knightsville store is closing.
"It's depressing," Kersting said.
But, he added, the move will allow him and his employees to concentrate on operating one store.
"We will be able to provide even better service and pricing," he said.
The closing leaves Piggly Wiggly with five independently owned stores in the Charleston area. In addition to Mr. K's in downtown Summerville, others are in Hollywood, Moncks Corner, North Charleston and St. George.
Meanwhile, the shopping center is up for sale. The owner, Knightsville Crossing Financing LLC, is asking $4.6 million for the 36,108-square-foot retail site, according to an online property listing. The 10-acre tract includes an undeveloped outparcel and pre-planned expansion areas for the anchor or other tenants.
