Review: 'Elsewhere' ponders the meaning of motherhood - Star Tribune

Image
"Elsewhere" by Alexis Schaitkin (Celadon Books) Sometimes it's fun to read something that doesn't fit in any particular category. "Elsewhere," the new novel from Alexis Schaitkin ("Saint X," 2020), is best described as a dark fairy tale, with elements of the supernatural, but with something very real to say about a topic all readers can relate to in one way or another — motherhood. Mothers who rea...

Sandy Pierce of Huntington Bank on Michigan's talent problems - Crain's Detroit Business

Huntington Bank's acquisition of TCF Bank last year resulted in 5,000 new colleagues for Sandy Pierce, one of Michigan's most connected business leaders. Pierce, a senior vice president and chair of Huntington's Michigan operations, inherited those 5,000 colleagues under her purview at the nation's 20th-largest bank, along with a dozen state-level regional presidents who report to her now. "I just have more to do," Pierce told Crain's. "And I'm really happy about that." What's got Pierce equally jazzed is Huntington Bank's construction of a new downtown Detroit headquarters for its commercial banking business will be complete by the end of the summer. The bank's corporate headquarters will remain in Columbus. Huntington employees, including many who came from TCF Bank's corporate offices in Troy, will begin moving into the 20-story building at Woodward Avenue and Elizabeth Street around Labor Day, Pierce said."Wha...

The Election Conspiracy Theories Driving Tina Peters to Run in Colorado - The New York Times

Image
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Just six weeks before the 2020 presidential election — game day for vote-counting bureaucrats — Tina Peters was so proud of her operation at the Mesa County clerk's office that she invited a film crew in to show it off. There's no chance of mishap here, she boasted. "The Russians can't hack into and start casting votes for someone," she said, as a few in the office chuckled. By May 2021, it was Ms. Peters, not the Russians, who had helped engineer an audacious breach of voting machines, according to an indictment charging her with seven felonies. Ms. Peters arranged to copy sensitive election software from county voting machines in an attempt to prove the 2020 presidential election was rigged, according to court records. Prosecutors said she committed identity theft and criminal impersonation, and violated the duties of her office in the process. Ms. Peters has pleaded not guilty. The strange tale of Tina Peters — a once-ordinary public ser...

Blueberry muffins, but make them whole wheat — and swoon-worthy - The Washington Post

Image
After biting into one of these tender, moist muffins, I couldn't help but wonder why every better-for-you muffin I've bought at a store has tasted so bad. I've all but given up on them because they have unfailingly been disappointing, heavy and dry, more penance than pleasure. I'm not exactly sure where they are going wrong, but I do know where this recipe goes right. 3-ingredient blueberry muffins from TikTok's favorite grandma are a true delight First, mixing regular whole-wheat flour with a more tender variety yields just the right texture, soft and cakelike, with a satisfying heartiness. (For tender flour, I use whole-wheat pastry or white whole-wheat flour to keep the muffin 100 percent whole grain, but all-purpose is fine, too.) Second, using enough healthy oil instead of butter keeps the saturated fat down without sacrificing the grain-coating tenderness fat provides. Adding less sweetener and more berries to the batter than is typical makes these better fo...
